Bunnies DON’T Hop! (and other Spring-themed Activity Ideas)

It’s that time of year again.

The time of year when Phys Ed teachers, kids yoga/dance/fitness instructors, recreation program leaders “hop” on the Spring-theme bandwagon and design bunny-themed movement programs.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a great themed class plan. 🐰

But I DON’T love seeing or hearing movement educators teach “Bunny Hops”.

You see, bunnies don’t hop.

You’re Teaching Dance The Wrong Way

First, your students watch you do the moves.

Then, you explain with words (or sounds) and ask them to remember the moves.
Next, your students copy the moves by repeating them back to you.

Once they know the sequence, you refine their technique by giving them verbal feedback.

And finally, (once you see that they can do the sequence) you hit ‘play’ on the music and they do the moves along to the beat.

How Did the Pandemic Affect Kids Health? Part 1

Did the pandemic really affect kids that much?? Yes. Yes it. Did.
In October 2022, ParticipACTION released the  2022 Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth.  This is Canada’s most comprehensive assessment of child and youth physical activity. There have been 15 edition of the Report Card, which gives a grade to Canadian kids on their levels of physical activity, sedentary behaviour, active transportation, sleep and other health factors.

Why Virtual Classes?

I’m not going to lie. I was the first to reject the idea of online kids classes. Business coaches have been telling me since 2012 to launch an online studio, and I didn’t buy in.

For me, teaching children wasn’t just about sweat, squats and scalability…I pursued a career and launched into kids fitness entrepreneurship because I hold a deep core value in movement, social connections and interpersonal skills and energy between human beings.
