In-Person Courses Are BACK (and 10 Reasons Why I’m Excited About It)

Two weeks ago, we scheduled a meeting at HQ, and just seeing its title in my calendar unleashed all kinds of excitement: “In-Person Course Planning”.

To be honest, nothing matches the happiness level I have for planning and teaching in-person instructor training courses!

Here are Top 10 Reasons I’m Excited that In-Person Courses are Back

  1. I love being with people! 👯

I think for many fitness pros, we didn’t truly realize what we had until it was taken away from us. Now that “being (physically) together” is back I’m excited to print some manuals, pack my sneakers and meet passionate instructors who want to make great money doing something they love.

2. Travel ✈️

I love travelling to different cities and meeting new people, seeing new places and learning about different cultures. In-person courses get me out of the house, into the world, and out of my comfort zone (which, as we all know, is the best place to grow) 🚀

3. I’m a kinesthetic learner 🤸

As a kinesthetic learner, I learn and retain information better when I physically experience a new skill. Presence is powerful, and it’s also an accelerator to learning. I can listen to an audio 10 times, watch a video five times, or try a skill one or two time before the information ‘sticks”.

4. I Can Read the Room  👀

As a facilitator of learning spaces, I feel like I can tune into the needs of a group more effectively when I’m in the space with them.  Does the group need a break? Was that activity helpful? Is everyone engaged? Is it time for a joke? Online platforms have given us new ways to monitor engagement but connecting to the vibes of the room, with my ‘woo woo’ senses is my favourite way to teach.

5. Energy  ⚡

Energy is what we give and receive. As an introverted extrovert, I didn’t mind online learning, but nothing energizes me and leaves me buzzing like walking out of a course after a day of collaborating, learning, practicing and laughing with other people.

6. Laughter 😆

Hearing laughter in a room, different voices, tones, energies, fills my soul like no on-screen emoji could ever satisfy or express.

7. You Can’t Turn Off Your Camera 💻

Being in-person means that learners are more present, mostly because of the setting. There are no cats or critters crawling across the screen, no water pots boiling over in the background, and no attempts at multitasking, like posting that reel on IG, checking emails, placing an online grocery pick-up order. (Okay, maybe there’s LESS of that stuff happening anyways)🤣 The accountability to stay present is higher because you are part of a group that is focused on the same thing: learning new skills on how to teach fitness to kids

8. Rhythmic, music-based skills practice is more effective🎶

At PL3Y, all new instructors start with our introductory course: DANCEPL3Y Kids, which covers foundational group instruction skills, including leading music-driven movements. Despite our best attempts at virtual solutions, breakout rooms didn’t cut it when it comes to learning how to connect to the beat, or leading another person along with the music. Some skills are just better practiced in-person, and this is one of them.

9. I’ve Got Friends (in Close Places) 📍

In-person courses connect people together, which often means they live near each other too. Social connections made during in-person courses have turned into long-term networks of local friends and colleagues who are close enough in proximity to pop into each others’ classes, hangout at a coffee shop or even keep practicing skills on their way to finishing their certification requirements.
