5 Ways to Make Money as a Kids Fitness Instructor

As a fitness instructor, you're passionate about helping kids move and feel better. But let's be real, you also need to make a living.

Here Are 5 Ways You Can Make Money Teaching Kids Fitness; Spring/Summer Edition

1.  Get Hired by Summer Camps

Summer camps are always looking for fun and engaging activities for their campers, and your fitness classes are a perfect fit! Summer camp guest speaking gigs are always the best: you have a captive audience of kids who are eager to learn something new and a group of playful and fun summer camp leaders who amp up the vibe by participating along with the kids, which always amps up the fun! Not only do summer camps pay well, I love coming in as a special guest because once I’ve attended the camp one year, it usually leads to repeat business year after year!

2. Launch Your Own Summer Camps:
If you're interested in working with kids or teens, launching your own summer fitness camps can be a rewarding and profitable endeavour. To launch a summer camp, you’ll need a location, a weekly plan with a variety of activities, insurance, safety protocols, and a strategy to market to parents, but the payoff is huge, both financially and personally, when you see the impact that having summer camps can have as part of your business.

3. Offer Birthday Parties
Planning birthday parties can feel stressful for most parents. And they have to do it every. single. year. As a local fitness leader, you can design and market “Active Birthday Parties” that feature different themes and activities that will provide a fun, safe and memorable experience for the birthday child, and their friends! (Plus, word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied parents can help grow your birthday party and weekly class business!)

4. Run Family Fitness Classes
If you’re someone who still feels hesitant to work exclusively with kids, Family Fitness is where it’s at!  Create and promote fitness classes that are designed specifically for parents to get a great workout as they also get active and interact with their kids. Summer Family Fitness “Pop Ups” are always a popular choice on weekends, where families can simply ‘drop in’ for something to do, without committing to multi-week programming at a time when many families travel or have visitors.

5. Teach Fitness in Schools
If you love working with kids and are excited about the idea of working with LOTS of kids at the same time, getting hired to teach school-fitness programs could be the perfectly aligned job for you! You get hired by a local school-fitness provider (like our PL3Y Education Owners), they give you the lessons to teach, they book the programs, and your only responsibilities are to show up at the school as a ‘special guest’, teach engaging lessons and VOILA, you’re making a difference in the lives of hundreds of kids each day (and getting paid to do it!) Best. Job. Ever.

BONUS: If you’re more of a “future planner” kind of person, Spring is a great time to plan and launch your school fitness business. In the Spring, connect with schools, offer demos and confirm bookings for Fall/Winter programs the next school year (because schools plan and confirm a large portion of special programs before Summer Break). Then, in the Summer months, you can polish your program, prepare your materials (and team), and enjoy the sun before the rush of business kicks off in the fall!
